January's SEL Word of the Month: Choices

Happy holidays to all,
As we prepare to come back to Williston High School on January 4th for the second semester, I want to talk about a few things that I need your help with. The first one is attendance. Last semester, Fall 2021 attendance was not good. We had averaged 93-94% attendance for the past 8 years. This past semester it was 86%. We have reinstated the attendance cap, so that a student cannot miss more than 10 days. They may lose credit if the absences exceed the 10 days. Medical excuses, family emergencies or COVID absences will not count as part of the 10-day limit. If students exceed the 10-day attendance cap, they will be required to submit an appeal to earn credits. We know that our students learn best when they attend classes. We need your help to get your students to WHS on time and to class.
There is lots of research on the correlation between attendance and academics. The simple explanation is the more days you miss, the lower your grade goes. It’s as simple as ripping pages out of a book. The more pages you take out, when you read the book, the less of the story you will understand.
The teachers at Williston High School prepare great lessons, and we need ALL students here to partake in them. Let’s work together to get our attendance rate back where it belongs. We can’t do it without your support!
Thank you,
Principal Germundson

Clothing and Textiles 1 students at Williston High School put their newly acquired skills to good use by sewing burp cloths. The completed burp cloths were donated to the Dakota Family Solutions Teen Mom program and the Family Crisis Shelter. Supplies for this project were provided by community members.
Clothing and Textiles 1 students develop their skills by applying them to create 2 small projects and an item of clothing. Students also explore careers and discover developments in the clothing and textile industry.
Williston HIgh School now offers a second level of Clothing and Textiles where students develop knit and woven fabrics, further develop their sewing skills and apply their skills and knowledge to a quilting project.
The Clothing and Textiles classes are under the direction of teacher Brenda Gullikson.
